The Escaflowne series follows the exploits of a young schoolgirl, Hitomi Konzaki, who is an ordinary enough high school student until a column of light transports Hitomi to a strange world called Gaea. Hitomi aligns herself with a young knight named Van, who she saw in a vision prior to being transported, and they begin a perilous journey with Escaflowne, the legendary god of protection. In addition to all the swords and sorcery, this series features a unique look because of its blend of cell and computer animation. It has achieved enormous popularity in Japan and in the U.S. and is something of a ground breaking anime because it contains elements of both shoujo (anime geared towards girls) and shounen (anime geared towards boys), creating a series that has enormous appeal for just about everyone.
